Is talking to a cat strange? Or burping after a meal? And who actually decides what is ‘strange’? In the performance Vreemd Ding (Strange Thing), you find yourself in a world full of wonderful customs and peculiar rules. Until one day, that world is completely turned upside down. A creative and musical show full of comic situations about finding your own voice.

Good to know
The performance contains no text (at least in a language we know), so it's also perfect for anyone who does not (yet) speak or understand Dutch!

Strange world full of odd customs
A child and her mother live together in a colorful living room with a sofa and a TV. They do everything together: flower arranging, tidying up, singing songs, doing the laundry. Day in, day out, because the mother says so. “Follow the rules, especially if you don’t understand them.”

The curious child tries her best to listen carefully to what is being asked of her. But she doesn’t understand it. And she increasingly loses herself in her imagination. Until one day, she decides to go exploring on her own. But how do you deal with a world that suddenly feels strange?

Growing up between two cultures
Actress and theatre maker Evgenia Brendes was born in the final days of the Soviet Union, in Kazakhstan in the 1980s. At twelve, she moved with her parents to Belgium, where she grew up between different languages and cultures. The impact of leaving your homeland and finding your own identity in a new world forms the backdrop of her work.

For the performance Vreemd Ding, Evgenia Brendes and her co-creator and co-performer Bram Coopmans were inspired by the picture books of illustrator, graphic novel writer, and Oscar-winner Shaun Tan. The final direction is in the hands of illustrator and theater maker Jef van Gestel.
