This opera by Puccini is world famous. The aria Un bel dì vedremo is one of the most beautiful arias for sopranos in opera literature. The Japanese geisha Cio-Cio San, nicknamed Butterfly, marries the American army officer Pinkerton. He leaves her upon which Butterfly's family turns against her. Madama Butterfly gives birth to a son and waits for the father. When Pinkerton returns, he has brought his new American wife with him.
The National Opera of Ukraine, Odessa performs Madama Butterfly in a new staging. This modern version is set with a sober design by designer Karl Spanhak. Powerful voices perform the moving arias and duets in one of the most beloved operas in history.
