La Sylphide

Het Nationale Ballet van Moldavië

Very rarely performed in the Netherlands: La Sylphide. Along with Giselle, one of the crown jewels of early 19th-century, romantic classical ballet. Only a few international ballet companies have this Bournonville work in their repertoire.

La Sylphide is the story of Scottish farmer's son James who leaves his fiancée to chase an air spirit (Sylphide). Filippo Taglioni, at the time the house choreographer of the Paris Opéra, wrote this piece for his daughter and dancer Marie Taglioni, who also got to dance the lead role. La Sylphide premiered in 1832 and had an immense influence on the art of ballet; it is known as the first romantic ballet.

Danish ballet master August Bournonville wanted to perform a reduction of Taglioni's original version with the Royal Danish Ballet, but the Paris Opéra demanded too high a price. Eventually Bournonville created his own production of La Sylphide, based on the original libretto, with music by Herman Severin Løvenskiöld. To this day, this ballet is one of Bournonville's most celebrated works.
