Ed Wubbe & Scapino Ballet Rotterdam - The Great Bean
Dance on Film
For The Great Bean, Ed Wubbe is fascinated by variety entertainment, Vaudeville and the magic of the circus. It is set in the 1920s, in the atmosphere of the 'roaring twenties', the rise of jazz, Hollywood and variety on Broadway with new dance styles like Charleston and tap dance.
With dance in different styles, circus acrobats and magic acts, Wubbe shows a theatrical world, full of glitter and glamour, but also with a hidden tragedy. This atmosphere is reinforced by the soundtrack with both swinging and emotional jazz songs from the 1920s. From the infectious Gipsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, the mystique of Edward Grieg's Peer Gynt suite, to the raw and moving voice of Billie Holiday.
