Sophianum

The ‘cabaret’ show at Sophianum secondary school in Gulpen is a biannual spectacle, well-known in the towns and villages of the South Limburg hills. Parels & Diamanten is a compilation of highlights from the rich history of these shows.

It is school theatre, so every student who wants to take part, is given the chance to do so. Participating in the Sophianum Cabaret is an experience many students remember and cherish for the rest of their lives. For some, it proved the encouragement they needed to pursue a career in the world of theatre and culture. Renowned artists like Suzan Erens, Enrico Delamboye and Brigitte Heitzer are shining examples of this.

A typical Cabaret show combines sketches, songs, dances and videos. It is a whirlwind of sights and sounds. And an emotional rollercoaster: a scene of sharp satire might be followed by a moving song. The audience is wowed by impressive dances and then offered a reality check in the next scene. Time to breathe? Well, that’s what the intermission is for.

Parels & Diamanten is a show that challenges you, teases you, winks at you, but ultimately embraces you with its warmth. It is a celebration. A celebration of nearly 50 years of Sophianum Cabaret history. A celebration of all the students and staff who took part over the years and whose lives were changed as a result.
