Heinrich Schütz, a composer based in Dresden, was in many ways ahead of his time. He composed the first German opera and studied as a Lutheran in Catholic Venice with Giovanni Gabrieli, who first noted dynamics in scores and coined the word 'concert' with his uncle Andrea. Musikalische Exequien is his most important funeral music. The flawless singers of Dresdner Kammerchor are the appointed interpreters. Energetic and shorter works by Schütz and Giovanni Gabrieli frame the performance. Festive music for a festive closing concert.
