Shakespeare's contemporary William Byrd refused to conform to the demands of the Anglican state religion. In doing so, he took great risks, but because of the prestige he enjoyed in the highest circles, he remained out of harm's way. He continued to compose and publish Latin Church music. However, this could only be heard in the privacy of clandestine gatherings in noble houses. The intimate atmosphere of these liturgies is in good hands with The Marian Consort, which sings a program based on such an illegal liturgy. The concert marks the Dutch debut of this renowned ensemble.
