Chanting to Paradise (opmaatconcert heiligdomsvaart)
J.M. Vogl-stichting: Voor De Zangkunst
The theme of the Heiligdomsvaart Maastricht 2025 (June 12-22, 2025) is Be a Bridge Builder. Prior to this, the J.M. Vogl Foundation for the Art of Singing is organising the concert Chanting to Paradise. The performing musicians have, with no exception, a strong connection to Maastricht, either being born, studying, living, working or making music there.
The concert opens with a work specially composed by Margriet Ehlen. In it, the text of the poem Chanting to Paradise by Emily Dickinson, whose first line, ‘Bind me-I still can sing-’, sets the tone for the concert and its message: perseverance.
Followed by: Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs, for baritone and piano; Maastricht composer Andrée Bonhomme’s atmospheric sonatina for cello and piano; John Tavener’s moving and impressive Svyati. The concert concludes with Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams in a version for baritone solo, chamber choir and piano.
This concert is co-sponsored by ‘Kapittel van Sint Servaas’ in Maastricht.
