Benjamin Britten composed his Cantata misericordium in 1963 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Red Cross. The text tells the parable of Good Samaritan. A musical discourse on peace, compassion and humanity. More charity in The Wound-Dresser by John Adams. Composed poems by Walt Whitman about his time as a nurse on the frontline of the Civil War. Adams: ‘We see the pale skin, the blood, the amputated leg and at the same time the love and tenderness. I wanted to express this in my music.’
