Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater
Philzuid
As soon as the orchestra deploys those plaintive, soaring melody lines and the singers join them with their harrowing dissonances, your heart leaps and you recognize Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.
The centuries-old Franciscan text tells of the sorrow of Mary, the mother at the foot of the cross. That gives this concert during the All Soul’s period an extra charge. Pergolesi composed his heavenly masterpiece in 1736, shortly before he died. Since then, his ‘swan song’ has been one of the most beloved classical works ever. Before intermission, maestro Luigi Piovani will play the Third cello concerto by the most famous of Bach's sons. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's virtuoso music is full of fantasy and Baroque brilliance.
